Question : Downgrade to XP

Have a Vista Emachine that I wish to downgrade to XP.
Popping in a XP CD gives an emmulation error.  Googling this shows many casues.
So I bought a new hard drive, using different DVD ROM and swapping out memory I get a BSOD 0x0000007B during install.
Thoughts?
