Question : Backup to NAS with Symantec Backup Exec 2010

I am about to retire our tape drive and use a NAS to backup our company data using Backup Exec 2010.  Now I know that this software supports backup to an NDMP server, but before I go ahead and make a purchase, I need some advice about NAS devices and the NDMP process.

I have been looking at the Netgear ReadyNAS 3100 as an option, but they are expensive.  I can get hold of a reconditioned Dell Powervault and stuff some big SATA disks in, but would this be compatible?  Does the NAS have to be running an operating system like Storage Server for Backup Exec to work with it ok?

Advice please guys!

Answer : Backup to NAS with Symantec Backup Exec 2010

Any iSCSI NAS or storage enclosure will do.

Keep in mind you will need lots of storage room, unless the NAS does some compression of its own, data will be stored 1:1 unlike tape drives that do 2:1 in average.

Attached you'll find a NAS Device Backup Configuration checklist to aid you.
