Question : CentOS 5 mirroring/synchronization over internet for redundancy.

I have two CentOS 5 servers in two different locations. I would like to set up redundancy/failover so if the main server goes down, the slave server takes over. Currently the two servers are set up in VMWare. The server will be running Apache, MySQL, and Rails applications that will all need to be mirrored to the failover server. What is the correct way of doing this so that the master server replicates to the slave server over the internet? Is there a way for DNS to point to the slave server if the master server becomes unreachable, or do we need to switch external DNS to point to the slave server manually?
Thank you
