Question : Rebuild SBS 2008 server

We have been experiencing a number of different bizarre problems with our SBS 2008 Server and I'm leaning more and more toward rebuilding the server. Aside from the obvious challenges of restoring the exchange DB and sharepoint content DB's, I'm also concerned about the impact this process would have on other servers in the domain. The SBS server is our only domain controller.

We curently have a second machine running Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V with Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 guest OS installations. All three of these servers are currently joined to the domain. The virtual '08 server is a web server hosting an external client-facing application. This server also hosts SQL Server 2008, both the DB and SSRS. I've been considering making the Hyper-V machine a second DC but am concerned that I will just propogate any AD problems I'm having with my SBS Server over to the new DC.

I'm pretty convinced that I need to rebuild the SBS server but that prospect scares me greatly. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on how to go about this so that we can minimize the downtime for our internal users as well as our external clients using the web app?

Answer : Rebuild SBS 2008 server

Hi,

The situation you are facing is not related to Sysvol/FRS replication, but a NTDS/AD replication failure.
I am not sure if you are aware of the term "Lingering objects/zombies" in Active Directory.

POA would be different if your DC's are Windows 2000 or 2003. You 'd hope you had the latter if you face this concern.

Reports like
Dcdiag /v
repadmin /showrepl *
 would be helpful!

However, you may refer to the followign links to understand what you radealing with:
Information about lingering objects in a Windows Server Active Directory forest
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910205

Event ID 1388 or 1988: A lingering object is detected
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc780362(WS.10).aspx

In the latter article, the events do not match up, but the remedy is the same.
Just ensure you are running the repadmin /removelingeringobjects in advisroy mode to enable detection first.

Hope this helps!

Thanks
Saurabh
