Question : Unable to Send Emails via Road Runner from Apple iPad Connected to Wifi

I was recently at a client's office and she asked me to configure her iPad so that she would be able to send and receive emails on her Road Runner email account. I went into the iPad email client and added her email account w/ pop-server.nyc.rr.com as the incoming server and smtp-server.nyc.rr.com as the outgoing server.

It is receiving email messages just fine, but when I tried to send out kept getting an error message to the effect that the SMTP server did not accept the user's credentials. I couldn't understand why, so I called Road Runner tech support. When the tech found out we were using an iPad via Wifi she said that we would need to contact the ISP that is providing the Wifi at the office (since it's NOT Road Runner like the client has at her home) in order to get the correct SMTP settings from them.

That sounded totally ridiculous to me b/c I was under the impression that SMTP is always simply whatever the email provider (in this case Road Runner) says it is. But then I did some searching online and found some stuff regarding iPhone & smart phones that supports the claim made by the tech. Two links are below.

Hoping someone can help me get this straightened out ASAP. Thanks in advance!

Answer : Unable to Send Emails via Road Runner from Apple iPad Connected to Wifi

If you insist on keeping your @nyc.rr.com email address then you can try using Gmail's SMTP server to send messages through. This workaround is easy and free but it does slightly increase a chance that your messages will get flagged as SPAM on the receiving end. Very slightly, though. Here's how it works:
1. If you don't already have free Gmail account then create one and log in.
2. In Gmail's Settings > Accounts tab, find an option to add an email address to send messages from.
3. Complete all the necessary steps to add your @nyc.rr.com address.
4. In your iPad, replace smtp-server.nyc.rr.com with smtp.gmail.com and SMTP's username/password with Gmail's username/password, also Use SSL should be On, authentication should be Password, Server Port should be 587
5. Make sure to send a test message from iPad and verify that it indeed comes from @nyc.rr.com address. If they appear to be coming from @gmail.com then double-check steps 2 & 3.
6. If you never intend to check this Gmail account then as a precaution I suggest you forward all incoming messages to your @nyc.rr.com address.
