Question : jQuery script error in Firebug

hi, Can someone help me understand how to correct this error that shows up in the Firebug?  It complains about '$' is not defined in all my jQuery script of $(document).....
I'm using jQuery 1.4.1.  Thank you.

Change the zones for your question then to at least ASP.NET and (if available MVC)

NB $ isn't any different than jQuery. They should both work.
I don't get any errors at the start...
