Question : SharePoint Number Search

I have a document library that holds PDF files sent by email from an automated process.  The file names are just a PO number, followed by ".PDF", such as 12345.pdf.  The problem is the searching for them.  If you enter just the number 12345, you get nothing on the OSSSearchResults page.  If you enter it as 12345.pdf, it finds it just fine.

Users can also upload PDF files to this library, with names like "Purchase Order 54321 from 6-20-2010.pdf".  So the search is not always going to be simply name followed by .PDF.  Any ideas, or at least a reason this should happen?
