Question : Adding a HDD in lunux Ent

i installed the eval copy of redhat5.5.
i added a second HDD in as IDE slave.
the BIOS sees the second HDD.
i rebooted the linux .
i do not see /dev/hdb when i do df -h
i did not see anything about /dev/hdb
but i did
fdisk /dev/hdb and was able to create extended partion
when i try to mkfs -t ext3 /dev/hdb1 i get this error
" /dev/hdb1: invalid argument passed to ext2 library while setting up superblock.

but my file system on the primary disk /dev/hda is ext3
