Question : change win.ini from boot with XP

My computer would load, but when I tried to start it in Safe Mode, I got a 0x0000007B error. I wanted to boot into Safe Mode to try to use chkdsk to try to repair the drive, which has slowed. Not thinking it through, I changed win.ini to boot to Safe Mode, thinking it might get past the error. It didn't, and now, of course, I can't get windows to fully load at all.

Since it was loading OK, although slowly, in normal mode, is there any way to access the win.ini from outside of windows to set it back to normal start?

The error I am getting is STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78AE62B, 0x00000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

By the way, this error shows up after the windows logo loads. I tested the hard drive using Partition Table Doctor 3.5, which loads with its own operating system, and it states that there are no physical errors on the disk.

Any ideas how to resolve this without having to reformat, and lose my programs?

Thanks

Answer : change win.ini from boot with XP

You can try to do a system repair, boot with the windows disc ( you may need to change the boot order in the bios to boot from the CD before it boots to the hdd). Anyway when it prompts you whether you want to boot from the CD quickly press the enter key. Once the windows setup loads, you will get a prompt to do a repair press r or to install windows press enter. You don't want to do this repair option, so press enter.... then press f8 to agree to the license agreement. You will now get a second prompt to do a repair, this is where you want to press the R key. If you don't have an option to do a repair at this point... then windows can not do this repair, you need to hit esc to get out of this window. If you are able to do the repair by pressing the R key, then it will replace all your windows system files and setup your applications. Normally you would not lose any data or the use of your applications, you may just need to reinstall your windows updates. The only way you may possibly lose data or applications when using this repair is if you use a different type of operating system disc to do the repair then what was used to originally stall windows on this system. IE if the system originally had the operating system installed via a computer manufacturers disc, and you do a repair with an oem disc you may lose your data or may lose the use of your applications. It is best to back up your data before doing the repair just in case you are using the your os disc.
