Question : Outlook 2007 freezes with GMail accounts

I have Outlook 2007 that I use with several Gmail accounts.  I access the Gmail accounts via IMAP, per Gmail instructions.
Responding to and forwarding Gmail emails via Outlook is a mess.  Ouitlook freezes much of the time and requires a reboot after I try forwarding or responding.
Is there a compatibility/processing problem with using Outlook 2007 for Gmails?  Should I enable POP and disable IMAP?
Thanks for any help.  This is vexxing!
