Question : No access to CD/DVD disc - list only
Hello,
The DVD writer in my Dell laptop (M4400) will read the discs and list the files correctly in Windows Explorer, but allows no access to the files. I get an "Access is Denied." error message when trying to copy files from the dvd (or cd) disc to my local drive. Trying to double-click files on the DVD disc, or right-clicking a file results in no action and no error message displayed. So it is unusable for anything other than getting a list of the files and folders on the disc.
This is a Windows XP sp3 system and the dvd drive is identified (in Device Manager) as TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-U633F. This behavior occurs for any user on the machine regardless of whether the user has local admin privileges or not. Same problem either way. It also occurs on discs I have written (using that writer, previously) or commercial discs.
I believe this is not a problem with the hardware, but rather is a problem with some system or registry setting or files or missing files. And here is why I believe that:
I have installed WMWare Workstation version 7.0.1 and have created a couple of virtual workstations - one is Windows 7 and the other is Windows XP SP3. When I launch either one of those workstations and try accessing the DVD disc, it works just fine! Files on the disc are accessible and can be run or viewed or copied. So that seems to indicate it is not an issue with the hardware at all.
I have McAfee anti virus software installed and up-to-date. Additionally, I regularly check the running processes for anything that seems unusual so I don't think there is anything running that is causing this.
Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this access issue?
Thank you.
