Question : confused by background image

Hi, I have just uploaded a background image for my homepage, something I didn't want to do as I didn't want to create a left/right scroll on browsers.

The iamge I have used is a little pixalated, but this is just for testing so no problem, anyway the image is 1800 pixals wide.

I changed the resolution on my screen all the way down to 800 x 600 and that was the only time I got some left/right scroll....My normal resolution is 1680 x 1050

I tried 1280 x 720, 1024 x 768 and and no scrolling left or right!!

Why would this be, the image is 1800 wide!! I am confused.  Can anyone explain?
