Question : Problems with connection to IMAP server

I work for a small non-profit organization (about 80 employees).  About three months ago, we switched from a POP3 e-mail system to IMAP through Google Apps.  We use Outlook 2007 as the client.  We connect to the Internet with two T1 lines (one for data, one for VOIP).  We have a Windows network with a domain.  All the PCs run Windows XP Pro.

In general, things are working well with the new IMAP e-mail system, but we're having intermittent problems with the following error message:

"Your IMAP server closed the connection.  This can occur if you leave the connection idle for too long".  This message appears as a small pop-up window in Microsoft Outlook.

If you just hit the "OK" button on the pop-up message, you can continue working fine, but it's annoying.  These messages seem to come in waves.  I won't see any for a couple of days, and then suddenly I'll see it five or six times in a single day.

What does this mean, and how do I fix it?  I haven't seen any other problems with the network -- web pages load fine, and our VOIP phone system operates without a hitch.
