Question : Viewing website updates

Greetings Experts,

This will probably be a painfully simple question to answer:  I am performing updates on a website and I have been given ftp access to the source files.  The person I'm doing this for said to create a backup directory and do the updates in this directory rather than on the live site since he wants to check out the work before it goes live.

Don't laugh at me but: how do I view the changes I make to the website located in this "back up" on the web?  I know how to create a new directory and put an entire copy of the site in it for editing and I have a test server on my home machine which is what I normally use for updates ... but I don't know how to view the changes I make on this website using a backup directory on a remote server.   I tried typing in the URL of the website and appending the directory name but it didn't work.

Answer : Viewing website updates

Instead of http://www.example.com/index.html you will need to enter http://www.example.com/backupdirectory/index.html.

The problem is going to be the links between pages in the backup site either pointing to backup URLs and thus needing to be changed when the site goes live or links going from a backup site's pages to a current site's pages.

More work for you. Hope you included the extra time in your proposal.

Regards,
Rod
