Question : SBS backup to another site - what do you need / is it feasible?

I have a client looking for a backup process to use Shadow Protect and send the data offsite.  For other clients, I've used Dattos servers.

But this client has a 2nd office location in the next state and wonder about backing up to that location rather than backup to Datto's offsite servers. They much prefer initial costs and owning the process and system than paying monthly fees for a service.

Does anyone do this? What hardware and software do you use? Does it wind up
being cost effective? For Datto, you have the initial cost of the box and then
approx. $50 / month for the offsite backup. Sure, we could build all the
recurring costs into an initial purchase. But if they have a geographically
remote location they can house the backups, how do you securely back up to that
location and have you found that it's feasible for that 1 client?

Answer : SBS backup to another site - what do you need / is it feasible?

Yes it is possible, but may not be feasible. We do something similar in our company, backing up data of a remote office to one of our servers in HQ. We have a 24/7 VPN connection between the sites and we do this via normal mapped network drive. It works, but we only have approx 5Gb data to backup.

So if you have large amount of data to backup then an ordinary broadband line may not be sufficient. Perhaps you can get a leased line or T1 or whatever between the sites. However, this shouldn't be your only backup for the main server, this should be treated as a second backup "just in case".
