Question : duplicate name exists on the network - domain environment, replacement server

We recently took over a clinic that had a previous win2k server domain controller. The prev techs tried to replace/upgrade it with a new domain controller. but they couldnt migrate the old EMR.

Since then weve moved everything getting ready to disconnect it. It has been running in a bandaged environment with the new windows 2003 server since we've seen it. for example lots of computers profiles are still stored on the old server.

Anyway we were able to migrate all the remaining EMR data and disconnected it.

We thought this would get rid of the "Duplicate name exists on the network" error message on all the wireless machines. (Doesnt seem to be happening on the hardwired machines.)

We have tried clearning the wins cache. we have tried disconnecting from domain and reattaching. we have tried deleting the computer from the servers computer list.

it just does not make ANY sense why it keeps giving the errors. there are NOT duplicate names on the network!!

Any advise to resolve this much appreciated

Answer : duplicate name exists on the network - domain environment, replacement server

Depending upon how many machines you have, you can see the MAC address of the duplicate name it tells you in  event viewer, I had this on my network to find that two colleagues were running the same virtual server with the same name and I tracked it by MAC address, I only have 11 PCs so it was not a big task.

One way would be to switch everything off and start one by one until you get the error. It is possible to have a DNS entry for one machine and another with the local name. I did this to get round mapped drive issues etc, called the new server a new name and gave it a DNS alias of the old server once swithced off, if I had put the old server back on again I would have had duplicate names. CHeck DNS also
