Question : Enterprise Network System File Check

I am a domain administrator that has an enterprise network that was stood up before I got here. Many of the machines depend on the "image/s" that were used to quickly deploy the hosts on the network. We have to track and manage these hosts but a lot of the times the operating system (Windows XP Professional) is unstable and is missing files. I want to know if there is a way to mass system file check computers on the network and the steps to follow to make system file check (Windows File Protection) work. A lot of the times the system file check will error out and/or require the OS cd; which when provided doesn't work.

*mass system file check on enterprise network
*troubleshooting sfc
*tips and tricks
*anything else that may help

***I know it's a lot but I don't have the time to post multiple questions about one problem...thanks

Answer : Enterprise Network System File Check

OK, I will help as best I can with the question you asked.  SFC will require the same version of the files as is installed in order to complete the repair.  If there is no local/cached copy it will require media, and you must ensure that this media is the same as the version of XP (ie, SP3/etc).

Have a read of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900910 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885522 for some information regarding modifying registry keys to point to a local media location.  The fact that SP2 is referenced on the 2nd link may indicate that this workaround is not required for SP3 and so if you are using SP3 then you can perhaps store the media centrally and configure registry to connect to a share for these files.

Hope this helps.
