Question : AutoCAD 2011 install cannot find pit.config and fails

I am having some issues getting AutoCAD 2011 installed on a machine. I have downloaded the .exe file from AutoCAD's subscription website (which my client pays for to get the new version every year) and placed it on the machine. I run the installer from the machine with icon > right click > Run as Administrator. The first stage of this installer appears to simply unpack all the files into a directory "AutoDesk" at the root of c:\. Entering this directory, I find a Setup.exe, which I do the Run as Administrator thing with again. This will run, and will claim to finish successfully.
When I double click the icon created on my desktop for AutoCAD 2011 which points to the usual acad.exe in c:\program files\autodesk\2011, but the installer (2nd one) appears to begin to run again. Thinking perhaps this was a final stage to the installer, I re-entered the appropriate information and clicked next. Despite the fact that this is the same information I put in the first time this installer ran, it will not accept it. The error message reads only "pit.config is not found!", and will not let me continue and will not let me run the program.
I have contacted the AutoDesk support team, and they suggested I try the installer with all non-Microsoft services and all startup programs disabled and the trash and %temp% folders emptied. In additon to this, they asked that I rename the file: \ProgramData\Autodesk\ADLM\ProductInformation.pit to ProductInformation.pit.bak. I did this, and still to no avail.
This is a 64bit Windows 7 install which also has AutoCAD 2009 and 2010 installed on it. I have heard that having multiple copies of AutoCAD from different years can cause problems, but I cannot uninstall these previous versions and leave my client with no way to do his job if the new install doesn't work. I appreciate any suggestions you may have.
