Question : Repair Install of Windows XP I get message The File 'ASMS' on Windows CD Needed

I have an emachines C2782 running Windows XP. I had it set up using a Windows Pro version and I had service pack 2 loaded. I ran a disk cleanup process and ended up deleting some of the Windows files so my computer would not boot into Windows. I tried using the disk that I had with the Window Pro version but it was for a Dell computer and it would not let me get to a repair install of windows. I also have an original Windows XP Home Edition CD, with the Hologram, etc that cam with another computer. It says version 2002 on the disk. This disk let me use the windows repair install and reinstalled windows. It got to the end of the installation and said the computer woudl restart but when it restarted I go the errow message "The File 'ASMS' on the windows CD is needed and it asked me to enter the path where the file is located. It already had a path typed in the path box, (globalroot\device\cdrom\i386) but now the computer is locked up and I cannot change the path. I also tried the shift F10 that Microsoft recommends but that does not work either because the computer is locked up. I also tried going to the dos prompt through the Windows disk repair routine and type in rgedit, but it does not accept the command. i also tried changing the BIOS to boot from the hard drive first, and that did not work. I'm pretty positive the drives are OK. I mean they work to download the program, etc. It just gets hung up when windows tries to reboot after the repair install. Ir's wierd because you can see the windows ads running in the background, but you can't get it to do anything. In the background the buttons for the install are checked off up to the installing windows button which is highlighted but not checked.
I would rahter not do a complete new install as I have a lot of programs on this computer that I probably can't reinstall. Anyone have some suggestions.

AFAIK the OEM System Builder CD (Retail OEM) will recognise the emachines CoA key so you shouldn't need a new license but you do need the media.  Your main problem ATM is the HDD now has bits of several incompatible XP installations on it.  Untangling that may never work properly without a complete reinstall :(
