Hi esi_steven_kearse, can't accurately point out why the lockups occur could be numerous problems, unfortunately it's a process elimination. From my sourcing it is a common problem and not a lot of solutions.
It seems that Adobe is not very good at releasing memory and consequently it builds up to a point where it crashes.
but errors referenced memory can't be read could indicate these
the project is very large..
bad ram.run a mem test
startup programs like msn/ spyware doctor or the AV is conflicting,
windows updates running in the background..
if you log on by using a Terminal Services client.
Log in as the user that installed InDesign, then start the application.
the operating system does not allocate a large enough buffer for the maximum string length that is permitted. When the data is larger than the buffer size, the Winlogon service stops unexpectedly and your computer generates that error message.

It could be a bad codec or a problematic video driver.
Update the video drivers
check these from Adobe
