Question : How can I run my PC in safe mode?

I have recently updated my antivirus to a new version and updated the database of this antivirus. When I ran a full scan of my system it did start to find some trojan programs and start to resolve them.
However my PC crashed and I had to restart my PC. On the reboot however it asked me to start from last known good reboot which I clicked. Since then I have not been able to get passed the welcome screen for my PC. My user account is listed on the screen and when I click on it it starts to load my profile but then it flashes onto my desktop for a split second then logs me off to the welcome screen again.
Please help or do I have to flatten my PC and start again?
