Question : Repair of Win XP

I don't want to do a clean re-install of Windows XP on my machine, as I have painstakingly built up an arsenal of programs and it will take me forever to set them all up again.

Maybe a virus or spyware has entered the system and now upon booting up the error message (white text on a black screen) appears, starting with:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change may have caused this..." etc.

I am given the following boot-up choices:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally.

Any of these brings up the blue screen of death, which appears for one second only:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer..." etc.

Then I'm taken back to the black screen with the same white text as before.

How can I repair my computer?
