Question : keyboard returns wrong characters

I have a friends gateway laptop with vista that had some malware on it.  I removed it using Malwarebytes.  Now the keyboard stopped working properly.  When I hit 'G', it returns 'g4b5' and N returns 'H7N6' plus many more wild and interesing combinations.  Some keys work ok .  Many keys don't work at all.  

I've plugged a USB keyboard in and it works fine.

I've checked the language settings and verified that the US keyboard is the active device.  

I've uninstalled the keyboard from control panel and restarted with the same results.

Any suggestions?
