Question : Windows 7 PC Going To Sleep When VSS Service Stops

Everyday at 03:00am get this event log messag:  the vss service is shutting down due to idle timeout
Running Windows 7  S64 with all corrections applied.  Have disabled system restore point for now.   But this started about a week ago.  When service shuts down, the PC goes into either a hibernation like mode or restarts.  Have seen both.  No external forces, such as power), just the VSS shutdown.  If it is asleep after the shutdown, it never will wake up and I have to power off and back on.   Not sure if related, but at the same time this started, the startup now takes like 10 minutes for the while it is just running the task manager.  Then the applicaions start up.  Seemed to all start occurring about the same time.  Also have this happening on another PC, but it is running Windows XP Pro SP3.   Any ideas?

Answer : Windows 7 PC Going To Sleep When VSS Service Stops

Take a look at this Microsoft article about Volume Shadow Service:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734545(WS.10).aspx

This article is about Server 2008, and I do not have this service running on my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit machines. Are you using RAID drives? or some other multi-drive setup to cause this?

I agree that Windows 7 should start up in a minute or two. 10 minutes is way too long. Take a look a msconfig to see if you can start in a reduced service mode and then add one by one until you see the offending service and if it needs to be running.  I also agree with checking for malware.
