Question : Our site is #17 on Google in its region for its keyword, how to get closer to top? Hire SEO?

Hi there

I am an otherwise 'competent' web developer but have no real training in the nitty gritty of SEO, and I need some advice on where to go from here: whether I can do the SEO myself or whether I should outsource it. The site has been listed for over 2 years with an Adwords campaign.

Here are some details -- what else do you need to know?
- We sell a product only within Australia (yet I myself am South African)
- this product has a unique keyword
- when searching for this unique keyword in google..
- - our website listing comes up ranked 17th
- - our Adwords ad is 1st
- the keyword name is in our domain name, all metatag titles in all our webpages, it's listed in two combinations in the meta-tag keywords and several times in the page content itself.
- I can only guess that our "poor" ranking is because not enough websites link to us
- - I am not too sure on how to get more links and I am worried about being penalised for certain kinds of links.

I can give you the URL but for some reason I am reluctant because, but if you recommend I post it here I'll happily do so.

Any advice is appreciated.
