Question : How to select items in field up to a certain character

I have a field that has data like:

abc - 123
def - 456
hijlkm - 789

etc

I want to select the data up to the '-' and insert into  a new field.

I guess you assume that we know the needs and requirements in a cable organization. I have no idea.

If you just need a standard RDBMS I agree with slightwv. Sybase might be better for mission critical databases in terms of performance and reliability. Syase promotes in memory databases in these days. It all depends on what you need and what you compare.

On the other hand, Sybase has the best replication technology and also Sybase is leader on mobile technologies as much as I know. So you should identify what technologies and features are more important for you first.
