Question : Creating and applying templates

Hi everyone,

I've created a template file in Word for mac 2004. The file contains some styles that I specified and there's also a logo in the header and a formatted footer with automatic page numbering and some other text.

If I open up a new document and then go to the tools menu and choose "Templates and Add-ins", I'm able to click the "Add" button to load the template. But then back in the blank document that I opened, I'm not able to see any of the styles that I created, nor is the header and footer applied.

Maybe I have the wrong idea about how templates are supposed to work. Could someone tell me if I'm supposed to see the style and the header/footer information or whether I'm doing something wrong?

Appreciate any assistance.

Answer : Creating and applying templates

Well, the Templates and Add-ins dialogue is for loading global templates and add-ins. Here is what the Microsoft support site says:

"Templates can store styles, AutoText entries, AutoCorrect entries, macros, toolbars, custom menu settings, and shortcut keys. Loading a template makes it available as a global template (global template: Stores macros, AutoText entries, and custom toolbar, menu, and shortcut key settings that you can use while you work with documents based on any template. By default, the Normal template is a global template.). "
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/about-loading-and-unloading-global-templates-and-add-in-programs-HP005186027.aspx

Note that there is no mention of margins, header/footer or other pre-defined text. That's just not the way it works.

You could start a new document based on your template, then copy and paste the text from the file you've received into that new document, then go through and apply the styles.

cheers, teylyn
