Independent disks are not affected by snapshots. Non-independent is same as "normal/default" and the virtual disk works with snapshots.
There are two flavors of independent disks:
persistent - changes are persisted across reboots of the virtual machine
non-persistent - changes are reverted (kind of like reverting to a snapshot) when the vm is powered off
