Question : windows 7 will not boot after windows updates last night

I have Windows 7 Ultimate, downloaded some windows updates this morning and upon reboot my machine freezes on boot up. Everytime, the animation rolls, windows loads up until the four colors of the flag come together, then the mouse and keyboard appear to activate (laser on mouse turns light on and num lock turns on the keyboard), then within seconds.... Nothing... it just leaves the Windows Flag up there, saying Starting Windows, but it's a lie! It's starting nothing.

I have tried to start last known good configuration to no success. Any good tips to bring my machine back to life?
