Question : Migrate from Exchange 5.5

In the event you have an organization that is still using Exchange 5.5, how can it move mailboxes over to Exchange 2007?

Answer : Migrate from Exchange 5.5

There are no Microsoft tools that support the migration of mailboxes directly from 5.5 to 2007. However, it is possible to migrate mailboxes to an Exchange server running Exchange 2000 or 2003 and then move those over to 2007.

The simplest solution is to install an Exchange 2003 server in its own organization, separate from the Exchange 5.5 organization. Use the Migration Wizard and move the mailboxes to Exchange 2003.

After completion, install Exchange 2007 into the same organization as the Exchange 2003 and use the Move-Mailbox Wizard to move those same mailboxes over to 2007.

Note

There are third-party solutions that might be worth considering when attempting a migration from 5.5 to 2007. For example, Quest Software (www.quest.com) has a Migration Manager that performs the Exchange 5.5 to 2007 migration. CommVault Systems (www.commvault.com) offers an archiving tool called QiNetix, which can archive Exchange 5.5 content and restore it back to an Exchange 2007 server. Logically, there are other tools to consider.
