Question : Which Cisco Router Is This?

I found this router in my network closet. I am trying to bring my business to using business grade equipment and I found this:

a 1720, though the modeling looks like it was made in the early 90's I was wondering how old it is and if its still even useful for a company of 100 employees?

Answer : Which Cisco Router Is This?

The number of employees is not the most important factor. What will you use it for? What features do you need?

Basic routing - no problem. dynamic routing protocols - it might become slow. VPN - only a few mbps thruput. Newer features like CBAC, ZBFW - I doubt that you will find an image for that. You will probably end up realizing that newer IOS-versions with newer features are too big to fit into ram or flash.

The 1700-series are today replaced with 1800:s which fit into the same product segment but more up-to-date with todays needs. Have a look at a 1800-router with the same interfaces as your 1700 and you will probably see that it´s not worth the effort to put that old router in a production environment.
