Question : How do I return a string from a url

I need to get a string that is returned from a URL.
For instance, for the following url:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/shared/async/expertBadgesJSON.jsp?q=KhVydoiCZbE=&bs=wdetbIonwr908hn0gttfnJ0=

I need to return a string that would look like this:

1:
2:
take({'memberId':'5942799', 'memberName':'THEQUIETSHADOW', 'eeple':'
', 'memberArticlesWritten':'2', 'memberTotalPoints':'29,904', 'memberQuestionsAnswered':'23', 'memberSinceDate':'06/01/10', 'memberZoneRank':'', 'memberZoneRank1':'', 'memberZoneRank2':'', 'memberZoneRank3':'', 'memberZoneDefaultPath1':'', 'memberZoneDefaultPath2':'', 'memberZoneDefaultPath3':''});

It will be used in a setTimeout() function to refresh a sidebar gadget that I am making to display my Badge.

I have tried:
1:
setTimeout("http://www.experts-exchange.com/shared/async/expertBadgesJSON.jsp?q=KhVydoiCZbE=&bs=wdetbIonwr908hn0gttfnJ0=",timeoutPeriod);

But it gives me an error. can anyone help me?
