Question : wildcard dns record?

Hi experts,

My client has a windows 2003 sbs server. This is the only DNS server in the network.

When I ping any name that can't be found on the server I receive a reply from a default internet IP.

below is an example:
c:\ping h
Pinging example.com [91.26.81.129] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 91.26.81.129: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=126
Reply from 91.26.81.129: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=126
Reply from 91.26.81.129: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=126
Reply from 91.26.81.129: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=126

This same address is pinged for all unknowns. Can anyone shed any light on why?

Is there a DNS wild card? I can't find any reference to this IP address within the DNS server

Thanks in advance

J

Answer : wildcard dns record?

Yep, that's right :)

Did you need your domain name masking there? One crept into the bottom.

So, it looks like that's it then, can you check the little tick box? You'll find it in Network properties, TCP/IP, Advanced and DNS.

Either we need to remove example.com from the suffix search list, or we need to untick that box. Once done the problem goes away.
