Question : Need some clarification on ESX vs. ESXi vSphere versions
OK, I was under the impression that the old 3.5 version was refered to as ESX or ESX 3.5 and with vSphere being released it went away with the old service console based ESX server and now you have ESX 4.0 or ESXi 4.0.
But, I have read a few things that indicate that there is a difference between ESX 4.0 and ESXi 4.0. From what I understand the new 4 series ESX servers all all non service console based, is that correct?
On a few servers I recently installed on VM Workstation the name it gives the VM is ESX 4.0, but when it loads to the config screen it says ESXi 4.0 build xxxxxxxxxxxx
The main reason I ask is because I recently downloaded the free version from VM's site and used a key for enterprise plus, I am stricly using it for trainning purposes so I can play around with all the features.
At any rate I just want to make sure I am using the best/only OS for trainning.
Thanks,

ESX4 still have the service console as well as ESX4.1 (came out yesterday). The next major release will have the service console going away.
