Question : Possible to rename "remote." sub-domain to "mail.domain"?

During the installation of SBS 2008, we tried to keep the external "mail.domain.com" web-address, changing the "remote.domain.com" wherever it appeared in the setup wizards.  We've also configured our SSL cert as "mail."  Now that the cert is installed on the server, the owa is working fine when remote users browse to "mail.", but the internal users are being prompted with a security alert "The name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site".  If this was a one time error, no problem, but Outlook 2007 starts each time with it.

Can the "remote." be fully changed to "mail.", or should I try to revert to the 2008 default (including re-purchasing the SSL cert)?

I suppose that Sharepoint application is set-up with classic mode authentication, what type of windows authentication is used, NTLM or Kerberos ?
In case of NTLM, try specifiy entire login name (with domain) in login prompt, e.g. [email protected]

If it not helps, then you are out of luck, authentication should be changed to claim based mode but it means create new Sharepoint application
