Question : If I have internet access, why won't IE display any web pages?

I have a Vista machine on which I have IE 8.  I recently moved the machine to a different location in my house, and I'm using a Netgear wireless adapter to attach to my home WiFi.  The machine has internet access because I can download mail, updates to my AV software, etc. but I cannot get it to display a web page.  It worked previously, and I have no idea what might have happened.  I thought it might be a DNS issue, but I am able to ping both internal and external IP addresses and also externally by domain name.  I have reinstalled IE and made sure that all updates are current for the OS and IE, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the wireless adapter, disabled and re-enabled the network connection, but I'm out of ideas.  This is driving me nuts - Help!

Well, even though I'd still recommend STL over MFC, this can also be done, e.g.
