Question : Adding more than one default gateway?

One of our routers went down last night, which is the one our Exchange server uses. This has happened before. In the advanced section of the TCP/IP properties, is it worth me adding another default gateway? So that if one goes down, it can start using the other one?

I just want to have some sort of method whereby the server can make use of another gateway to go out out of in the case one router suddenly halts? So a backup 'gateway?:)

Thanks
Y

Answer : Adding more than one default gateway?

If you are not routing mail through a smarthost and instead sending mail directly from Exchange to the Internet then this is a reasonable solution.  The default gateway will default to the backup route when a switch is triggered because TCP has tried one-half of the TcpMaxDataRetransmissions times to send a packet through the current default gateway.

This should not result in any lost traffic from the Exchange server.
