Question : Hardware requirements for Hyper-V on SBS Environment

Hello Experts,

I need to find out if my current hardware is suitable for running SBS Standard (as a DC) and R2 Standard (as the TS) on the same machine using Hyper-V. My machine has only one processor (X3430 Xeon Processor, 2.4 GHz 8M Cache, Turbo) and 4GB of memory (4GB Memory (4x1GB), 1066MHz, Single Ranked UDIMM). I was already advised to get more memory, however i am not sure that only one processor is OK. I am only going to run two software programs (Quickbooks and Smart Service) on it and provide Remote Desktop to up to 5 users at one time to run those programs.

Thanks,
Stan

Answer : Hardware requirements for Hyper-V on SBS Environment

The x3430 is a QUAD core processor - so this should be just fine.  The problem you'll have is the RAM - you NEED more.  SBS won't install on less than 4.  HyperV REQUIRES (just as any OS) a portion of RAM (I'd suggest AT LEAST 1 GB and be more comfortable with 2 GB) and the Remote Desktop Server will require RAM (given your described usage, AT LEAST 2 GB and I'd be more comfortable with 4 GB.  Bottom line, get AT LEAST 12 GB and you should be fine.
