Question : On Cisco Hybrid 6509 with CATOS/IOS, how do you browse the const_nvram: to check vlan.dat file?

Hi, we have a Cisco 6509 chassis with CATOS  Sw : 8.6(4) and IOS  Version 12.1(11r)E1  running with Supervisor 2.   We want to  backup the config of the device,  including the vlan.dat file which we understand is on a separate file.

We have been trying to run dir const_nvram: on the MSFC and the switch (L2 PFC) prompts but we can't find any reference to the file.  Where else might the vlan.dat file be located?   We know the file exists since doing show vlan shows all the vlan information correctly.

Thanks  very much.

If you run CatOS, the VLAN info is not stored on a seperate file, but part of the config file.  The config file location is reported in the output of the "show boot" command.

If you have a pure IOS operating system, the vlan.dat file can be used to store the vlan info (if you use the "vlan database" mode to set the vlan config, and do not do it from global config mode).  Note that Cisco recommends configuration from the global config mode.
