Question : what is the function of a HDMI port on a flat screen television?

Hi Everyone;

           I have my eye on a flat screen television which has several ports on the back of it.  One of these, which I am totally unfamiliar with, is an HDMI connector.  Could someone explain what this means in addition to its purpose or function?  Since I saw PC/HDM! on this port, I am assuming this port somehow interfaces with a desktop pc or laptop.  However, I am unsure.

HDMI is for transferring multi-media data from a device (PC, Cable box, PS3) to your television.  It transfers both audio and video at a faster rate than other types of connections.
