Question : Windows 2008 Server Domain isues
I have a 2003 SBS server that functions as the domain controller. I have just recently purchased a new Dell server with 2008 64 bit server installed. I was able to join to the SBS domain with no issus. I then decide to add the new server as an additional DC on the domain. I went through all the required processes as far as adprep with all the functions ie /forectprep and /domainprep. When I ran all these procedures I got all the correct responses from the utilities and proceeded to join the 2008 server. When I run the dscpromo it goes so far as to connect to the domain and gives this message ""To install a domain controller into this Active Directory forest, you must first prepare the forest using adprep.exe /forestprep. The adprep utility is available on the Windows Server 2008 R2 installation media in the \support\adprep folder" I followed the directions that are in the MAy 27th technet article to the letter but wonder if there is something I am missing.
Also as a side note. I may not need to be doing things quite this way and need some guidance. What I really want at the end of the day is to remove the SBS 2003 Server. It is getting old and we have outgrown that server. I want to completely remove it and shut it down. Should I be setting up a new domain and try to setup trust between these domains as from what I understand the SBS server will always be the schema master and no way to move this to 2008. I would really appreciate some advice from those that have tried this and learned from their expreience. Thanks in advance for any advice and instructions you can provide.
Answer : Windows 2008 Server Domain isues
You need to run adprep32 on your SBS server adprep is only for a 64-bit install of your current DC which seems not be correct.
So, run adprep32 off the R2 DVD.
