Question : Shift Delete Error

I use the <Shift> <Delete> to permanently delete files.  Lately, it takes a few tries - and there are some processes running in the background which I cannot find anywhere.  I'd like to close the processes in Task Manager but don't know which ones they are.  When I try to shut down my computer, it tells me there are programs running so I cannot shut down my compuber.  Is it possible that this is a virus?
