Question : Configuring two NIC card with Windows Server 2008

Hello,

I am replacing a six year old Winodws 2003 server with a Windows 2008 Server.  The services for this server are:   DNS, DC, DHCP, WINS, Application Server, File Server, Print Server, SQL Server, Intranet.  I do NOT expect to use it for any external connectivity except for me to use it as a client when downloading updates, etc. and to access it remotely for maintenance.

I have two network cards in this server.  Each network card has it's own IP address. I am getting an error that there is a network confirguraion problem with DNS.

What is the best practice to get the best throughput with two network cards?

Answer : Configuring two NIC card with Windows Server 2008

On a DC you should only have one card enabled because of DNS and AD replication issues. There are some configurations you can do to get around this but the recommedation is to still disable one NIC.

Also, I recommend keeping your network infrastructure services like DNS and AD seperate from other services like App server, SQL and IIS. If you can I would keep those seperate. I know some sites are too small but there is always virtual machines that can be installed.

On your secondary NIC you want to go into the TCP\IP settings click advance then DNS tab uncheck register this interface with DNS.

Then follow instructions below.
