Question : Unable to renew SSL certificate (with the same key)

We have a frontend Exchange server providing Outlook Web Access.
The OWA certificate (internal SSL certificate) expired a few days ago and now our users who connect to their Exchange mailboxes via RPC over HTTP are now unable to connect.

I tried to renew the certificate by going to my certificates.mmc console on the Exchange frontend server; I can see the certificate under Console Root > Certificates (Local Computer) > Personal > Certificates and it shows clearly the expiry date. I then select 'Renew certificate with Same Key...' and receive the following error message:
'You do not have permission to request a certificate based on the selected certificate template'.

I googled this error message and none of the solutions quite work for me.
Thanks for your help!

BTW, we're using an internal certificate as opposed to a public certificate as there are only a handful of users who require RPC over HTTP e-mail access so a public certificate is not an option.

Answer : Unable to renew SSL certificate (with the same key)

Hi Raghuv, thanks for your reply but I solved the problem myself- see below:

The certificate is issued by an internal CA as far as I can tell (which is also our domain controller).
The expired certificate is installed on our Front-end Exchange server and the certificate service (IIS) is working fine but the certificate itself is expired so won't work.

I 'd already followed the steps outlined in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc726033.aspx and received the error message when I got to the fourth step.
(On the Action menu, point to All Tasks, point to Advanced Operations, and then click Renew this certificate with the same key to start the Certificate Renewal Wizard.)

Fo anyone else who is experiencing the same issue, I finally managed to solve it by renewing the SSL certificate from within IIS on our Front-end Exchange server (IIS > Web Sites > Default Web Site > Directory Security > Server Certificate ...
