Question : windows xp home blue screens with bad _system_config_info on boot up

I have a windows xp home pc that blue screened on me this morning.
it comes up with Bad_system_config_info
error 0x00000074

i have tried booting into safe mode doesn't work
boot of my xp home oem disk to run a repair via the new installation option. It picks the partitions up, but not the installation thats already there.
I've run chkdsk fixmbr, fixboot
run last known config, doesn't wok
i've not installed any sftware or hardware recently to be of any concern

Any other options i can try ?

Well from the looks of things everything is pointing to the motherboard. Did you do a complete format reinstall ? You might wanna try that as a last resort. A simple repair usually does not rule out hardware errors.

If the format reinstall fails, then the motherboard has failed most likely.
