Question : iPhone 4 in the USA

Hello Experts!,

My girlfriend is studying for 10 months in the USA starting in August, and is in need of a new phone. Having an iPhone 4 myself, she also wants one for Skype / Facetime etceteras. However, having looked at the cellular providers un the USA they seem expensive and complicated. What is going to be the most cost effective way to get an iphone and use it in the US for this time? We are currently in the UK and have the option to buy the phone unlocked for £499 ($770). What is going to be the best option?
- Buy outright in the UK and get a SIM - only plan with data in the US (recommendations please)
- Go to the US and buy with a AT & T sim, get the phone subsidised, 24 month contract, then buy the contract out after 10 months?
- Other?

The city she will be in is Boston if that makes a difference.
