Question : cisco console port

my laptop doesn't have the serial connection to do a rj-45 to db9 connection.
i was thinking of using the rolled cable.  before i use my time making this cable and trying it out blindly i was wondering how you do it.
can you even do it?
what do you have to configure for your ethernet port on your laptop to use this rolled cable to connect to the console on the cisco.
its and 850 series by the way.
