Question : mac OSX cannot edit smb.conf access is denied

Hi All I have MAC  OSX 10.5.8 and i am logged in as the administrator ( admin ) I try to edit with VI the /etc/smb.conf and it still tells me that I dont have the right acces ( you do not have proper access privilege ) ? I dont understand since I am logged in as admin .. anyone help...
