Question : Is There Any Advantage to Having 2 Separate Windows-Based PCs "Connected" to Each Other?

Hi Experts,

I have a slightly unusual situation and I have the feeling the question is stupid but since it involves over $500 of equipment, I thought I would ask now rather than kick myself later. Here is the situation.

I currently have an HP e9150t quad core desktop using an Intel i7 CPU ([email protected] GHz). I have 8 GB of RAM and am running Windows 7 Home Premium-64-Bit. It was purchased new from HP, in July 2009. The Microsoft products I am running include the 2007 versions of Outlook, Word, and Excel. As fate would have it, this model has turned into one of HP's biggest lemons of the decade.

I have managed to keep it relatively stable even though it does have more than its share of glitches. I just realized after the one year warranty was out that when I purchased it, I purchased it using a credit card that had an automatic one-year warranty extension. I will cut to the chase and tell you that basically, I am able to purchase another computer up to the original purchase price of my current one ($1000, not including tax), and will be completely reimbursed for the purchase.

I still have a few months left to do this. Ironically, with all the problems I've had with my current PC, it is now running better than it ever has been. Forgive the question if it is in fact as stupid as I am afraid it may be, but here it is:

If I purchase another computer, is there any advantage (and I use that quite loosely) to have these computers somehow connected and able to share files, processing power, or anything else that would be beneficial?

Feel free to laugh. Thanks for your help.

"...  DHCP on the modem takes care of setting the network addresses. "  ==>  NO

All of the DSL modems I've seen in the last two years were also routers.  AT&T's current wireless modem is also a router with four wired ports on the back.  I forgot that they didn't use to come that way.  Both of the ones that I've had in the last eight years were also routers.
