Question : How to get Dell poweredge 2970 to recognize hard drives?

The server did have VMware esxi on it for testing but now I need to put server 2003 on there instead.  However we did have a couple older hard drives for that server that already had server 2003 on them so I tried to swap out the sets of hard drives so that it would just read the ones that already had it.  The server would not recognize those hard drives at all.  I then tried to place the hard drives that had VMware on them back in it and now they are not recognized at all.  I have tried swapping them out and switching orders but I can not get any of them to be recognized on this machine.
